Visit a nomadic family and take part in Mongolia’s one of two paramount festivals, Tsagaan Sar. Everywhere you see are people in holiday spirits, dressed up in traditional Mongolian clothes, on their way to their kin. Tsagaan Sar is the embodiment of the customs, traditions, cultures and beliefs of the Mongols. With an abundant history of more than 800 years, it is a celebration to send away the bleak winter and welcome the flourishing new spring.

The festival starts on the first day of the year according to the Mongolian lunisolar calendar. Thus, it is known as the Mongolian Lunar New Year. The name, Tsagaan Sar, literally means “White Moon” as it denotes the first month of the year while the color white conveys the pureness and goodness. The celebration consists of two main parts, Bituun (Bituulekh) and Shined (Shinelekh).

Bituun is the lunar phase of a new moon and is known to be Mongolian New Year’s Eve. On this day, there are a number of rituals that Mongolians perform in order to bring good luck for the year to come. First, houses must be cleaned out thoroughly, which is often a day-long task. Candles are lit to symbolize enlightenment and to give light to any spirits who have “become Buddhas” that might visit. Three chunks of ice are also left just outside the door, since the horse of Palden Lhamo, a Buddhist god, visits every home on New Year’s Eve and will be thirsty. Finally, a family dinner is enjoyed in the evening, card games are played in the hopes of beginning a year-long good luck streak, debts are paid off, and grudges are forgiven.

Shined is the lunar phase of the new crescent moon and is the Tsagaan Sar itself. On this day, people visit their relatives, beginning with their parents and continuing in order of descending age. They make many short visits to dozens of relatives. Each time, special rituals are followed. Everyone greets with holiday-specific greetings such as “Amar baina uu?” meaning “Are you living in Peace?” Gifts may also be exchanged.
